Events & Entertainment
If you're looking for entertainment and special events in the United Kingdom you'll be spoilt for choice. From headline-making new drama to balloon festivals, there are so many things to do that it can be hard to fit them into your calendar. Some events, like music festivals or plays, can sell out, so it's advisable to do some research and book in advance if you want to be sure of tickets for a popular event.
Many UK towns organise arts festivals dedicated to literature, music or local figures and traditions. Some are extremely popular and well-known, such as the Edinburgh Festival, or Cheltenham Literary Festival, while others are on a smaller scale with more local input.
English Heritage, who manage historical sites and ruins around the country, organise a rich programme of historically-themed events, from re-enacted battles to wandering minstrels. In August their star event is a weekend-long Festival of
History which sees a fantastic array of pageantry, fun and learning. Their events are often hard to reach without a car, as sites are usually in the countryside, but are well worth attending if you can. Children in particular love the historic demonstations, costumes and drama, while exhibits and shows are fascinating and informative for all ages.
London is famous for its theatres, and has the biggest range of performances in the UK, where you can see anything from Shakespeare to musicals. As well as the reconstructed Globe Theatre in London, Shakespeare enthusiasts can head to Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer, where the Royal Shakespeare Company put on special workshops and events as well as full-scale productions.
