UK Tourist Destinations
London is the UK's greatest tourist destination: a huge, vibrant and exciting capital city with attractions to suit everyone.
For those with an interest in seeing smaller towns, rich with history and a more peaceful atmosphere, choose a break in a provincial town like Bath, an elegant eighteenth-century spa resort, or York. Oxford, a short distance from London, is a town dominated by its scholarly past, with the university colleges crowding into the heart of town, by the bends of the River Isis.
Visitors to Scotland usually start in Edinburgh, Scotland's capital and home of the world-famous Tattoo and Festival. North of Edinburgh lies the dramatic mountainous landscape of the Highlands, and off the western shore are the windswept Scottish islands, including Skye. Whisky trails cater for tourists interested in Scotland's popular export.
If the Scottish Highlands seem too remote, mountainous scenery can also be appreciated in England's Lake District, and in Wales, where active holidaymakers can enjoy a huge range of hiking possibilities. In National Parks there are plenty of well-signposted trails, as well as organised walking tours.
For the quaint side of traditional England, pick a little-known destination like Ludlow, a historic market town in Shropshire, near the Welsh border, where black-and-white houses line the narrow streets, and the town castle is open to the public. Picturesque villages abound throughout England, although in an outstanding area like the Cotswolds you may find that tourists outnumber locals in the summer months.
For beautiful sandy beaches and rocky cliffs, visit Cornwall, the county in the the south-west corner of England, where Atlantic beaches attract surfers from all over the UK, and where hikers can enjoy miles of unspoilt coastline.
